During the Middle Ages, young women often had only two options: marriage or the convent. Women who chose (or had to choose) the latter took a vow of fidelity to Christ. That is not to say that they were completely insulated from worldly distractions. Many texts have survived about the experiences of monastic life, about death and grief, devotion and virginity. However, there are also satirical and rebellious songs about desire, eroticism and love affairs. Through songs and motets from medieval monastery manuscripts, Ensemble Peregrina provides a glimpse into life behind monastery walls.
